Politics and religion were never good conversation topics for us, but travel and photography were. We could talk about them for hours and hours. His love of both were a great influence on me. These photos were taken in the last hour that I spent with my grandfather, Walter H. Thompson. I miss him.

Having moved to the South Bay a few months ago, I have been enjoying discovering all of the restaurants, neighborhoods and shops in my new home. Fafafel’s Drive-In is famous and for some reason, I didn’t get around to eating here until now. Oh, what was I thinking? I should have come here the very first day. I think that I might now be addicted.

It’s back. I am referring that feeling where I just need to be in Rome. I close my eyes and I hear the fruit and flower vendors in Campo dei Fiori; the late-night music in Trastevere; the traffic; the water flowing from the fountains in just about every square offering a cool respite for my hot, tired feet. I can almost taste a slice of pizza with fiori di zucca with a teeny drizzle of olive oil and sprinkling of sea salt followed by uno cono di gelato; fragiolini, I think would be best today. With so much to do this weekend so that I can finish school work, how will I concentrate with Rome on my mind? I need to get back there when I am done with school. Anyone know of any grants or programs for budding photographers?

Chinatown by the Bay

This past winter I worked on a project shooting in San Francisco’s Chinatown. This work was all done in 35 mm, black and white film. I have just finished scanning and editing the images for the purposes of creating a book. Special limited editions of this book, which include a limited edition print, will be available at the book release party on Thursday, August 5 at Modernbook Gallery from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Modernbook Gallery is on the 4th Floor of 49 Geary St, San Francisco, CA 94108. Wine and refreshments will be served.

If you would like to see some of this work in person, I currently have a show of selected works from this series at Cafe Piazza in Palo Alto Square, Palo Alto, CA. The photographs will be on display through the end of June.

A smaller selection of images from this body of work was just honored with an Award of Excellence in the 4th Annual Mike Ivanitsky Award for Photographic Excellence.

First Book of Photos Available

I have just created a book of photos through Blurb.com. This book combines photos that Matt and I have both taken on our travels around the world.

About the book:

The English poet Henry Reed said “All human beings are interconnected, one with all other elements in creation.” This book is a collection of photos drawn from our travels across several continents. Each image is a single and seemingly unique moment on Earth. These captured moments of both people in their daily activities as well as their environments are sequenced to illustrate that our moments and our stories are actually shared with millions of others all around the world. Despite our geopolitical differences, the similarities that we share connect us across cultures, politics, and geographic boundaries. These moments define our humanity.
